A solution for a smelly washer dryer

Washer-dryer as the word suggests does both washing and drying process. The usual outcome of the wash process is nice fluffy wrinkle less clothes but at times some users experience bad smell from inside the washer dryer. How does the smell develop from the washer dryer? Lets take a close look at the cause.

The smell does not emanate from the machine but from the leftover residue inside the washer dryer. This residue may be the soiling, the softener or the detergent that stick to the bottom of the washer dryer after use. Environmental conditions such as the dampness, warmth, darkness and the use of hard water are ideal enough for the bacteria to grow rapidly. Washing done at lower temperature help to clean clothes to glittering shine, but the bacteria still remains inside the washer dryer. As bacteria grow well in hard water areas, it is necessary to underdose detergent. This is required even in soft water areas.

Steps to eradicate the pungent smell

• Door seal is to be dried and left open.
• The seal near the drain hole needs to be dried to prevent black mold formation.

A hot wash with powder detergent at 60º C or 90º C is to be done once a month. This is to be done without any load. Powder detergent includes oxygen bleach. Bacteria will be completely removed by the combination of hot wash and powder detergent. Repeated washes will completely remove bacteria growth. The smell and the bacteria growth is to be checked for regularly and the hot water wash is to be done regularly.

• Liquid detergents does not contain chlorine bleach agents. Hence this is not to be used to avoid bacteria growth.
• Backfilling of dirty water from the drain also must be checked. If it happens then it must be corrected by calling a plumber. This is mostly because of improper installation.
• The soap box and the softener section if used, must be cleaned.
• The soap drawer is also to be kept clean.

Following these steps must remove the bacteria growth completely. Regular maintenance will keep the machine running without pungent odour.
